Waltham Native Surprised with Full Athletic Scholarship from Umass Football

Being from Waltham (Mass.) along with a couple other writers on this site, I find it pretty interesting to hear about how former WHS athletes are doing – including the likes of Mackenzy Bernadeau (guard for the Dallas Cowboys and a 2003 WHS graduate) and members of our hometown Boston Cannons Steve Duffy (head coach) and Jon Hayes (midfielder and 2004 WHS graduate). It is always interesting when you hear about the college athletes.

Danny Maynes was a 2010 graduate of Waltham High and is currently a redshirt sophomore defensive lineman playing for Umass Amherst.  Danny got a little surprise recently when a couple of police officers interrupted coach Charley Molnar’s team meeting.  The officers said they were there to serve Danny and junior Rob O’Connor with papers.  It came to everyones surprise when coach Molnar put up the next slide on the powerpoint presentation stating “Coach Molnar is awarding you a full-athletic scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic calendar year for your hard work and team dedication on and off the field”.  The team was only able to see this but Danny and Rob were filled in on the huge surprise seconds later after reading the letter.  Elated they hugged their coach and celebrated with the team.

The whole thing was recorded on video and posted on youtube.

Congrats to Danny and Rob, keep up the hard work.
