Pedro Martinez: “Just A Matter Of Time” Before Rejoining Sox

According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, former Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez is set to rejoin the organization in an official working capacity at some point in the near future. While speaking at the David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic in Punta Cana, Martinez stated that “it’s just a matter of time” before he returns to Boston in a role similar to the one recently given to his former teammate, Jason Varitek, who is now an assistant to the general manager.

“That’s what I want to do. I want to be there,” said Martinez. “And also, get close to Ben Cherington and [Larry] Lucchino, learn a little bit, see if I like that, the office, or if I like more on the field. I’m just going to get my feet wet and see want I can learn and then I’ll decide what I’m really going to do.”

Cherington reached out to Pedro earlier this offseason to see if he would be interested in working with the team in any capacity, an offer which Martinez greatly appreciated. Pedro stated that he would gladly join the team whenever they call, but will wait for them to get their priorities in place first.

The 41-year-old Martinez, who last played in 2009 with the Phillies, is a three-time Cy Young winner (two with the Sox), one-time World Series champion (2004 with the Sox), and an all-time Yankee hater.
