Red Sox Prospect Bryce Brentz Shot Himself While Cleaning His Gun

Red Sox outfielding prospect Bryce Brentz suffered a bizarre injury a few weeks ago when he accidently shot himself in the leg while cleaning his gun, S0x general manager Ben Cherington said on Saturday.

The 24-year old Brentz was cleaning his personal handgun when it unexpectedly went off, sending a bullet into Brentz’ leg and clean out the other side.

Cherington said Brentz is recovering in Fort Myers, but he won’t be ready to participate when camp opens later this week, though he did say it’s possible the outfielder could be ready to play in games before spring training ends.

“It’s something he’s going to recover from and be fine, and it won’t affect his baseball career,” Cherington said. “I think he understands he got lucky. It’s a serious thing. He’s got to be careful.”

Seriously lucky indeed, both Brentz and the Sox organization. According to Baseball America, Brentz is the N0. 8 prospect in the Boston organization and made it to Triple-A Pawtucket last season.
