Bruins not expected to re-sign Andrew Ference

CSNNE’s Joe Haggerty reported Wednesday morning that it was unlikely that the Bruins would re-sign unrestricted free agent defenseman and alternate captain Andrew Ference.

The news doesn’t come as a huge shock considering the fact that the Bruins have several young defensemen waiting in the wings, including Matt Bartkowski, Dougie Hamilton, and Torey Krug.

With the NHL lowering the salary cap and the Bruins with some big decisions to make in terms of roster moves, going with the younger, more affordable D-men seems like the better play for the organization.

Ference also acknowledged that it was unlikely he would re-sign in Boston, a place he has called home for the past six years. After being traded to the Bruins from the Calgary Flames back in 2010, Ference became a fan-favorite in Boston and was extremely active in the community year-round.

I’m sure Boston will miss him as much as he’ll miss Boston.
