John Farrell waited for Will Middlebrooks to figure things out, but now he’s taking the matter out of his control.
Middlebrooks was optioned to AAA, swapping roster spots with first base/outfielder Brandon Snyder. José Iglesias will take over the hot corner for the time being.
Middlebrooks leaves the majors with a .192 average, with 19 runs, nine home runs, and 25 runs batted in. He struggled with a back injury earlier in the season, and could never get going again.
Iglesias’s hot hitting probably made the decision a little easier. He is still batting .426 with 18 runs in just 34 games. He became the primary option when Middlebrooks was placed on the disabled list, and played so well that the Red Sox traded Pedro Ciriaco to the San Diego Padres. After the two third basemen rotated in and out of the lineup, Iglesias slowly squeezed more at bats out of the rotations.
Middlebrooks has time to straighten things out, but a month in Pawtucket may not be a bad thing.
