The Red Sox traded infielder Pedro Ciriaco to the San Diego Padres in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations on Friday afternoon.

The news doesn’t come as a huge shocker considering it was pretty obvious that Ciriaco had become the odd man out in the Red Sox infield once Will Middlebrooks was activated from the disabled list. The surprising offensive success Jose Iglesias has seen in the big leagues this season effectively paved the way for Ciriaco’s exit from Boston.

The 27-year old Ciriaco, who was designated for assignment earlier this week, has struggled both at the plate and in the field this season after a solid 2012 campaign.
